One of the things I love about watching a good Bollywood film is that you can't always predict the twists and turns it will take.
As the Vishal Bhardwaj 2011 dark comedy 7 Khoon Maaf reached it's brilliant conclusion, I can say that I absolutely didn't predict how it would end. The story is based on the short story Susanna's Seven Husbands by Ruskin Bond.
While the number seven may refer to the sins of Susanna, the number seven is also the number of "deadly sins" used to educate and instruct early Christians about the concept of sin. Given the amount of time that our main character Susanna Anna-Marie Johannes (Priyanka Chopra) spends in the local chapel, it seems somehow relevant.
Though not enumerated as such in the Bible, the idea of the seven deadly sins continues to be a reminder of the flaws in the human makeup. These flaws can be seen through the motives and personalities of the men who share their lives with Susanna.
Wrath - uncontrolled hatred or anger - is sometimes borne out of unfortunate circumstances. However, rage is consuming - taking over body, mind and spirit. If you are consumed by rage it is easy to lay waste to the world and the opportunities in it. "Refrain from anger and turn from wrath; do not fret - it leads only to evil." (Psalm 37:8, NIV)
Greed can lead one to lie, cheat and steal from others to fulfill their desire for more. Sometimes greed masquerades as need. Unfortunately, those who are greedy often find it hard to achieve satisfaction. "In their greed they will make up clever lies to get hold of your money." (2 Peter 2:3a, NLT)
SLOTH - failing to work to develop your own gifts and talents - is one of those sins that creeps up on you slowly but when it takes root it is difficult to eliminate. Laziness leads to disorder and disarray. "Through sloth the roof sinks in, and through indolence the house leaks." (Ecclesiastes 10:18, ESV)
We are often told to have PRIDE in our work or performance. However, those who have excessive pride value themselves more than others. This often leads to mistreatment of those around them. "Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall." (Proverbs 16:18)
GLUTTONY - similar to greed - is most often associated with over eating, but it can also be interpreted as selfishness; essentially placing concern with one's own interests above the interests of others. "Their end is destruction, their god is their belly, and they glory in their shame, with minds set on earthly things." (Philippians 3:19)
LUST - is an intense desire, often sexual - can consume one's thoughts, deeds, and actions. It turns those lusted after into objects. "But I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lustful intent has already committed adultery with her in his heart." (Matthew 5:28, ESV)
ENVY - or covetousness - is wanting something that you can't have because it belongs to someone else. You shall not covet your neighbor's house. You shall not covet your neighbor's wife, or his male or female servant, his ox or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor." (Exodus 20:17)
The story of 7 Khoon Maaf is intriguing and the film won many nominations and awards, particularly for Priyanka Chopra's performance. The following is the official trailer for the film.
