The lavish 2005 film Paheli presents the characters with a series of dilemmas they need to resolve based on a premise that is pure fancy in this day and age - that love drives a ghost to assume the form of a woman's husband while the real husband is away on a 5-year business trip.
To make this central premise work, there needed to be magical elements sprinkled throughout this enchanting world created by director Amol Palekar.
There were magical marionette narrators (voiced by Naseeruddin Shah and Ratna Pathak) who helped move the story along by providing their interpretation of events in the film. Characters had to deal with dancing rose petals, food that disappeared and reappeared, strange birds, and doppelgangers coming face-to-face.
So, some special effects were needed. Here is a short video highlighting some of those special effects created for Paheli by RedChillies.VFX.
