The placement of two item numbers nearly back-to-back in the 1995 film Zamaana Deewana was just too good.
These two item numbers focus on Rahul Malhotra (Shah Rukh Khan) and Priya Singh (Raveena Tandon) who have spent the first half of the film toying with each other then helping each other avoid problems they encounter as the local police, led by Kamdev (K.D.) Singh (Anupam Kher), try a variety of tactics to break down the feud between their fathers. The main tactic is to make Rahul and Priya fall in love.
Rahul and Priya spend so much time playacting and sidestepping the authorities in their lives that they develop a bond of friendship. When K.D. Singh is seriously hurt because of their actions, Rahul and Priya work together to rescue him while supporting each other through the emotional turmoil of the experience.
After Singh regains consciousness, he tells Rahul and Priya,
"It was my mistake. It's not necessary that if two young people are brought together they would fall in love. It's not true that if fire and fuel are kept close to each other flames are inevitable. If the quantity of oil is high, it can extinguish the fire, too. Actually, one cannot make love. Neither can it be made to happen. Love happens by itself. I beg forgiveness from you for my mistakes. You'd to suffer many hardships because of me."
When Singh tells them to return to their respective homes, they realize their friendship may be at an end. They hitch a ride on the back of a truck and are treated to the serenade of "O Rabba" from a wedding bus behind them:
Words of love are waiting to spill from my lips,
how can I remain silent?
How can I express what my heartbeats tell me
I won't leave your side, let the world be angry
This is my decision, what's yours?...Oh Lord!I'll never break my promise, no matter what
I'll spend my life waiting for you
I'll swallow my tears for the sake of love
I trust your love
Not just my heart, my life is in your hands, too
This heart of mine had to go crazy someday
Your love is part of my destiny
I've written your name on my heart
This is my decision, what's yours?...Oh Lord!I won't leave your side'let the world be angry
The earth is silent, the skies are mute
This is a test of our love
No one can break the bonds of the heart
No one can turn the course of a hurricane
We'll write our own story
Let the world do what it may
I'll stay in your arms, I'll bear your sorrows
This is my decision, what's yours?...Oh Lord!I'll never break my promise,no matter what
I won't leave your side, let the world be angry
This is my decision, what's yours?...Oh Lord!
As they listen to the words of this song they each think about their relationship, struggling to understand their feelings about each other. Watch this friendship between Rahul and Priya blossom into something more in "O Rabba".
Once they understand the truth of their relationship, they go back to K.D. Singh to tell him that they want to get married. Given everything that has happened up to that point, he discourages their union. He sends them home ... again.
Unfortunately, they don't get far because the car battery seems to have been drained. So they are stuck. Could they walk home? Well, yes - except for the fact that it has started to rain heavily. During this monsoon they discover they not only have an emotional attraction, but a physical attraction as well.
Within the space of five minutes, the film takes you from stirring the embers of love via "O Rabba" to igniting flames of passion while singing in the rain. They are quickly separated before they are consumed by their attraction. They struggle with their need to be with each other in the item number "Neend Kise Chain Kahan".
You'll have to see for yourself what happens to these star-crossed lovers by watching Zamaana Deewana. All I can say is it's "too good."
