While watching Raju Ban Gaya Gentleman (1992), you see the love triangle form between Renu (Juhi Chawla), Raj "Raju" Mathur (Shah Rukh Khan), and Sapna Chhabria (Amrita Singh) and you begin to wonder who Raju will end up with.
When Renu models a dress Raju bought for her, the song that follows makes it all clear. The song is titled "Kehti Hai Dil Ki Lagi" ("My heart is saying") on the soundtrack. But on some DVDs, the song title given is "Na Na Na Chuna Naa" ("No, no, no, don’t touch me"). The first title is the line initially voiced by the man, whereas the second title reflects the sentiments voiced by the woman.
Raju and Renu have entered uncharted - and deep - waters in their relationship. The lyrics of the song can be translated as:
My heart is saying, belong to me today
My heart is saying, belong to me today
Yes, I’m crazy for you
No excuse of yours
Will work now, my loveNo, no, no, don’t touch me
Don’t get carried away in love
I’ll have to face consequencesYour insistence is not right
How can I explain, my darling
No, no, no don’t touch me
Don’t get so lost in loveYour beauty is young and so is my love
Where are we in control?
Beauty is young, love is young
Where do we have our wits about us?
Let’s get lost in a new world
Let us unite and become one
What’s in your heart is also my desire
I’m in such a dilemma
What’s in your heart, is in my heartI’ve fallen into deep trouble
I have some compelling reasons
That’s why, my love, there is this distanceNo, no, no, don’t touch me
Yes, yes, yes, don't go away
In a 1997 rediff.com interview, director Aziz Mirza explained that he prefers to have simple plot lines in his films so he can focus more on relationships:
"The Romeo-Juliet kind of love stories are okay. My film is about how two people fall in love. The last sentence they say is 'I love you.' Now that's a love story if you must know."
This item number reflects how the relationship between Renu and Raju has grown.
This was the first pairing of Juhi Chawla and Shah Rukh Khan in a film. The online chemistry between the two leads works for the audience and the film. SRK's performance in this song also helped lay the foundation for his future as a romantic leading man. However, according to Glamsham, SRK's boy-next-door looks were initially a surprise to the actress.
Juhi once said, "When Aziz Mirza, director of RAJU BAN GAYA GENTLEMAN told me that the hero is a new 'Khan' making his debut in Bollywood, I felt he must be as charming as Aamir Khan but on the first day of the shoot when I saw Shah Rukh I couldn't believe that he was the hero!"
Juhi Chawla and Shah Rukh Khan went on to star together in several successful films, including Darr (1993), Ram Jaane (1995), Yes Boss (1997), Duplicate (1998), Phir Bhi Dil Hai Hindustani (2000), and One 2 Ka 4 (2001).
Here is the song "Kehti Hai Dil Ki Lagi" composed by Jatin Lalit with lyrics by Vinod Mahendra, as sung by Kumar Sanu and Alka Yagnik and picturized on Juhi Chawla and Shah Rukh Khan.
