'Twas The Night Before Christmas in 1993 (Darr)

Deciding on the most auspicious date to release a film can sometimes be challenging. Indian films released around Dilwali and EID seem to do the best. But recently we've seen films released around Christmas also do well. The box office hits Ghajini (2008) and 3 Idiots (2009) were both released on December 25.

One film released on a Christmas Eve 20 years ago today has become a classic and helped further establish the acting credentials of a newcomer to Bollywood - Shah Rukh Khan.

With all due respect to Clement Clark Moore's "A Visit from St. Nicholas", we humbly offer the following poem in celebration of the release anniversary of Darr: A Violent Love Story, starring Shah Rukh Khan as Rahul Mehra, Sunny Deol as Sunil Malhotra, and Juhi Chawla as Kiran Awasthi.

 

'Twas the day before Christmas, in year '93,

When Yashji had a story he asked us to see.

A thriller of a boy's crazy love for a girl,

A strange kind of story, but Yash gave it a whirl.

 

Rahul, played by Shah Rukh with the last name of Khan,

Was obsessed with K-K-Kiran, whose Sunil had some brawn.

 

His passion a secret, his persona unknown.

He would taunt her and haunt her and call on the phone.

 

In Kiran, Rahul incited fear - a deep darr -

and he took down Sunil with the nose of a car.

 

 

Yet Sunil recovered and survived the abuse.

Next, Rahul got chummy with the couple - in ruse.

 

But for husband Sunil, his suspicions now grew...

a direct confrontation was what he must do.

 

Rahul admitted to his schemes and obsession.

Then with a knife he stopped Sunil's aggression.

 

Now Kiran was his, with Sunil sent to the grave ...

But wait! Sunil's not dead and his Kiran he'll save.

 

What moral this story and what meaning this tale?

A crazed love never wins and true love never fails.
