ROMEO
[To JULIET] If I profane with my unworthiest hand
This holy shrine, the gentle fine is this:
My lips, two blushing pilgrims, ready stand
To smooth that rough touch with a tender kiss.JULIET
Good pilgrim, you do wrong your hand too much,
Which mannerly devotion shows in this;
For saints have hands that pilgrims' hands do touch,
And palm to palm is holy palmers' kiss.ROMEO
Have not saints lips, and holy palmers too?JULIET
Ay, pilgrim, lips that they must use in prayer.ROMEO
O, then, dear saint, let lips do what hands do;
They pray, grant thou, lest faith turn to despair.JULIET
Saints do not move, though grant for prayers' sake.ROMEO
Then move not, while my prayer's effect I take.
Thus from my lips, by yours, my sin is purged.JULIET
Then have my lips the sin that they have took.ROMEO
Sin from thy lips? O trespass sweetly urged!
Give me my sin again.
Thus begins the love story in Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet which informs the item number "Lahu Munh Lag Gaya" from the 2013 film Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela - "A raw passionate love story, set in a violent world of guns".
Director Sanjay Leela Bhansali composed the music for the film. Bhansali along with the writing duo of Siddharth-Garima wrote the screenplay. The lyrics were developed by Siddharth-Garima and the song was performed by Shail Hada.
"Lahu Munh Lag Gaya" was picturized on Leela Sanera (Deepika Padukone) and Ram Rajari (Ranveer Singh). In this item number, the two share an on-screen which kiss generated quite a bit of online buzz. In a November 2013 BollySpice.com interview, Siddharth and Garima talked about that moment in the film:
"We are proudest about creating a woman’s character that’s unbridled, uninhibited and very strong. She kisses the boy as much as he kisses her. She trusts him blindly. We think it will create a benchmark. The next time you see a boy wooing a girl on screen (before he kisses her) you’ll get up and leave the theater. Someone questioned – 'Leela kisses him first. Then why is she insisting on sindoor or marriage?' That reflects the judgmental Indian psyche. We think a girl who kisses first, should be 'easy'. She shouldn’t have any qualms about giving herself easily. But a marriage is a part of an Indian girl’s upbringing. Hopefully, slowly even women need to understand and comprehend their power. We are proud we could achieve that in the story because that’s the need of the hour."
According to BollyMeaning.com, the lyrics of the song "Lahu Munh Lag Gaya" can be translated as:
The heart flies,
it has got wings, and attached to you,
the heart flies...
the feet advance, they move towards you,
they move, leaving the world ...I've tasted blood,
It was asleep in the veins, but now it's awake,
By touching of lips,
from the corner of dreams,
even avoiding all else, the lips touched the lips still.Today this mad one is roaming here and there today,
The breath is stuck with him only...It used to flow freely, it used to remain full to brim,
I don't know when (blood) went away, taking my life..
Lips, touched lips, touched blood ...
Sameer and Arsh Tanna won the 2014 Filmfare Award for Best Choreography for "Lahu Munh Lag Gaya". Because this song picturizes an early interaction between Ram and Leela, the characters are passionate and flirtatious.
According to an October 2013 Free Press Journal article, Sameer Tanna described Deepika Padukone as a "thorough professional" and also had good things to say about Ranveer Singh's dedication to learning the dance steps for this item number:
"Having choreographed for 'Lahu Munh Lag Gaya' for Ram-Leela in which Ranveer was to dance to our steps. I remember when we tried to change some steps, which Ranveer was unable to get right. So, we thought of changing those steps to easier ones. However, he refused to get to easier steps, and told us even if I take 200 rehearsals, I do not mind but I will do the steps that you are trying to get right. He is a loveable person and has no airs whatsoever."
