As the media came to set up for the TATA Motors IIFA Awards Green Carpet, several of us were intrigued by what looked something like a Star Trek transporter pod.
It turned out to be a 360 degree video camera linked up to the IIFA Vine account. A "Vine" is a 6-second looping online video. The celebrity would stand in the pod while the camera rotated 360 degrees while shooting a video which would then be automagically posted to the @IIFA Twitter account.
Though shooting a 360 view of the actors is nothing new in Bollywood - in fact, it is a rare Indian film that doesn't use this technique - many of the stars seemed to enjoy the opportunity to be filmed in this setting. The contraption even generated a smile from the usually solemn Nawazuddin Siddiqui!
The Vines aren't the highest quality - particularly as darkness falls over the Green Carpet - and the sound is fairly poor. But what makes these videos most interesting is what they bring out in the stars. From the enthusiastic cheer of Anil Kapoor to the running Milkha Singh, the over-the-shoulder peek of Deepika Padukone, the romantic waltz of Vivek Oberoi with his wife, the "Zinda" singing Siddharth Mahadevan, the energetic Ranveer Singh who jumps in to "repair" the overworked camera - each of these Vines provides a glimpse into the personalities of some of the celebrities who walked the green carpet at IIFA 2014.
