The 2007 masala comedy Welcome features an all-star cast with hilarious and ridiculous moments that both the audience and the on-screen characters enjoy.
The premise is that criminal don Uday Shankar Shetty (Nana Patekar) wants to get his younger half-sister, Sanjana Shetty (Katrina Kaif) married. However, no one wants to marry into a criminal family. Meanwhile, the family of Rajiv Saini (Akshay Kumar) are looking for an alliance of their son into a decent family with little success. Destiny brings Sanjana and Rajiv together and they fall in love. The rest of the film features the humorous trials and tribulations of these families as they try to come together or stay apart.
One of the hilarious moments occurs early on when Uday Shetty's criminal friend Sagar 'Majnu' Pandey (Anil Kapoor) crosses paths with Rajiv and decides he is the man who should marry Sanjana. With Uday, he hatches a plan to help Uday win the confidence of Rajiv's family - through blackmail.
Manju Pandey finds out that Rajiv's uncle Dr. Ghungroo (Paresh Rawal) owns a fashion boutique. He places a call to the boutique and has the following conversation with Dr. Ghungroo over speaker phone with Uday Shetty and others listening in.
Dr. Ghungroo: Hello ...
Majnu: (On speaker phone) Hello, Ghungroo sir, how is your business doing?
Dr. Ghungroo: (With sarcasm from a frustrating day.) Business is good! Very good! I'm sitting on a hefty profit!
Majnu: Won't you share your profit with us? Send 4 boxes immediately.
Dr. Ghungroo: This is a boutique. You get ladies dresses here not empty boxes!
Majnu: You fool! A box means 10 million rupees! 10 million!
Dr. Ghungroo: Oh I see! 10 million? And you want 40? Did your parents leave it with me?
Majnu: (Uday and the others break into laughter) You rascal! I'll send you to hell! Do you know whom you are talking to? This is Majnu bhai! Majnu bhai! I hope you have heard my name before!
Dr. Ghungroo: Of course I do. You just told me twice that you're "Majnu bhai! Majnu bhai!" So what should I do?
Majnu: Hey smarty, have you gone mad? Looks like I may have to kill you! I am asking for protection money! Do you understand?
Dr. Ghungroo: All right! So you want protection? Do one thing. Get me 40 million. I will protect you. And if you want to get beaten up then call again. If I don't change your gender ... now hang up!
Majnu: (To Uday, disbelief in his voice.) He's taking me on!?! (Closes phone.)
What makes this scene particularly entertaining is how flabbergasted Majnu Pandey appears when his threats are countered by someone who doesn't fear him. Rather than everyone getting angry, they burst into laughter.
With this scene so early in the film, you connect with these gangsters in an unexpected way - through their friendship. There are many such scenes in the film where Majnu and Uday - clearly good friends - share good times together or have a hearty laugh in an unexpected situation.
