The romantic comedy drama Kapoor & Sons is a refreshing take on love, family, and the ties that bind us together.
After 90-year-old "Dadu" Amarjeet Kapoor (Rishi Kapoor) is hospitalized following a heart attack, grandsons Rahul and Arjun Kapoor (Fawad Khan and Sidharth Malhotra) return to the Coonoor homestead in Tamil Nadu. Having been estranged for five years, they are now a bit older and wiser and seem inclined to start anew.
While their brotherly bonds are beginning to strengthen, Tia Malik (Alia Bhatt) enters the picture. The relationship of each of the brothers with this spirited, fun-loving young woman is one more challenge for the boys as they must also deal with bickering parents Harsh and Sunita Kapoor (Rajat Kapoor and Ratna Pathak) and harmful memories.
While some may find the story offers some unique plot twists, the strength of Kapoor & Sons is in the way it presents a cinematic family portrait painted in the complicated hues of secrets, unfaithfulness and unfulfilled dreams. Yet, this is a dysfunctional family is trying to move forward and no one is singled out as the root cause of the family problems. There is no bad guy. Everyone in the family has secrets. Everyone has told lies. Everyone has been hurt in some way.
Because of the family issues, everyone is charting their own separate course. There have been some modest successes for the Kapoor family, but even those are tinged with family drama.
Dadu is the exception. Performed brilliantly by Rishi Kapoor, Dadu is a breath of fresh air in a family that is barely holding on. While his hilarious antics may offend some, his good nature generates a smile more often than a frown. In his own unique way, he repeatedly brings family members together and helps them heal.
In the end, the much-desired family portrait finally comes together as family members reach out embrace truth, seek reconciliation and recognize shared loss and love.
Kapoor & Sons is one more in a series of Bollywood films that have strongly-drawn characters and down-to-earth stories that connect with audiences around the world. As Hollywood films continue to move into the superhero and science fiction genre, Bollywood wisely continues to release heart-warming and entertaining cinematic gems such as Kapoor & Sons, Piku, and Dil Dhadakne Do. These films offer a refreshing perspective on family ties and the struggles many of us face as we journey together through life.
